Hi – I fly into Trat on December 2. Do I just need to get a taxi to the ferry port? Am I able to buy a ticket online to secure my spot? Thanks!

When you land in Trat you can buy a ticket for the shared minibus service that will drop you off at your hotel on Koh Chang. Or can take a pick up truck taxi to the mainland ferry pier.

Tickets for the ferry can’t be booked online in advance.

    Hi Captain,
I am arriving 18th December, flying into Trat from BKk but the arrival is 17:55 which will not allow time to catch the 18:30 ferry. Is there likely to be change in ferry times in peak season or maybe Bangkok Airways move their flight earlier?

What would be the cost of private boat taxi if needed? is this is easy to arrange?

    many thanks

No one knows at the moment. It was the same situation last November. After a week or two Bangkok Airways changed the time of PG307 to 17:15, which it is at the moment.

A couple of locals have boats and take people to the island. I think they charge around 4,000 Baht for the boat. Then on Koh Chang it would be another 500 – 800 Baht for a private taxi to your hotel.

The boats to Koh Chang leave from piers near Laem Ngop. Don’t go to Laem Sok, that is about 40km away and is the pier for boats to Koh Kood.

Boats are timetabled for every hour. But are usually more frequent. There’s no way to know in advance exactly what time a boat might leave. But the last boat is at about 18:30.

    Hi,

You can take your bicycle on either ferry free of charge. It is easiest to use Ferry Koh Chang from Ao Thammachat pier as they have more frequent departures and a faster crossing time. Just buy a boat ticket when you arrive at the pier and you’ll be on the next boat that will depart.

Is the last option from Ao Thammachat going at 18:30 (so we manage :)) or 17:20 (we won’t manage :().
And, do we stil buy tickets at the peer?
We are 2 people with luggage, so hopefully you can squeeze us in for the 18:30 boat as long it goes ?

    Kind regards,

If it’s very busy and a lot of people are waiting then ferries will be running later than 18:30. But this won’t be announced in advance. Ideally leave Kanchanaburi as early as possible.

The best pier is Ao Thammachat pier. The official timetable is on this page. However during busy periods the boats run more frequently (every 20-30 minutes) and not according to the timetable.

It might be but no guarantee. It’s around 20 minutes drive from the airport to the mainland pier.

Bangkok Airways will probably change the flight time back to arriving at 17:15, which has been the case for the past 4 months and is the same for all flights until the end of October.

Until November last year PG307 always arrived at 17:55, but the last ferry was at 19:00. Then the ferry company changed the time of the last boat to 18:30 and Bangkok Airways followed by changing the time of PG307 to 17:15. So they probably haven’t got round to updating flight timetables for next high season.

Ferries aren’t running to fixed timetables at the moment. They depart about every 30 minutes or more frequently if it is busy. So be at the ferry pier around 2 and a half or 3 hours before your flight and you will get to the airport in time for it.

I am curious that how long time to drive from the pier to Thailand border, to Cambodia? I have 2 children and they is are under 3 years so that they are free? Is it only we pay for 2 adults for the tickets? How do we book ticket for ferry?

Ferry tickets can’t be booked in advance. You can buy them when you arrive at the pier. Your kids will be free.

The mainland pier is called Ao Thammachat.

From the pier to the nearest border, at Hat Lek, is around 1 hour 45 minutes.

If you are going to Siem Reap, then it’s around 3 and a half hours drive to Aranyapratet border crossing.

The maximum waiting time was around 1 and a half hours yesterday and on 1 January. But now all the Thai visitors who were here for New Year have left, so waiting time is back to petty much normal. Boats aren’t running to a fixed timetable. They are around every 30 minutes or more frequent if it’s busy.

Boat tickets cant be booked in advance. You have to queue and wait for a ferry. You should try to get to the pier as early as possible on the 30th. And on the 4th it will be better to leave Koh Chang early morning or late afternoon, then you will avoid long queues.

The Bangbao Boat wooden boat arrives at Bangbao around 16:00. So you probably won’t have time to get to Trat Airport for flight PG308.

It will be too late for the shared minibus. So you would need a private transfer and then have to hope that the 16:45 ferry departs late. (As it will be about 50 minutes drive from Bangbao to Ao Sapporot pier) If it is on time the next boat is at 18:00 – and you would miss your flight.

A better idea is to take the Boonsiri Ferry from Koh Kood to Laem Sok and then a pick up truck taxi to Trat Airport or the Boonsiri ferry shuttle service. Then you wont have any problem getting to the airport on time.

Ferries still run if it rains. The rainy season is pretty much over. Just the occasional thunderstorm and heavy downpour.

(Ferries occasionally stop operating due to extremely bad weather but I can only remember that happening once or twice in the past few years and for a few hours at a time.)

Nothing has been announced et regarding changing the time of the last ferry back to 19:00. If it remains at 18:30 then you may or may not be able to get to Koh Chang the same evening. No-one can guarantee that it will be possible.

Yes there’s a good chance as there will be a lot of Thai tourists driving to the island. But there’s no way to know 100% for sure in advance.

A decision would only be made on the day, depending on how busy it was.

      Ferries are running as normal.

There has been some heavy rain but the sea between the mainland and Koh Chang is sheltered from storms, which come from the southwest. So bad weather rarely affects the ferries in a serious way.

The usual (pre-covid) timetable is here : https://kohchangferries.com/boats-koh-mak-koh-kood/.

However as there are still very few foreign tourists, there will probably only be the Bangbao Boat wooden boat service running in November. This will start running some time in late October / early November, depending on the weather and demand.

There are boats between the islands, but only during high season – from late October to mid May. No services at the moment.

Last year there was just one service a day by wooden boat in high season
      .

But before covid there were also daily services by speedboat and Boonsiri Ferry.

I don’t know if they will start again this year. It will depend on how many tourists there are.

At the moment the last ferry is at 18:30. But when Bangkok Airways start flying PG307 again, the last ferry will revert to the normal time of 19:00. So that passengers on the flight won’t miss it. (The last boat was always 19:00 until covid.)

      Using a Google maps search:

Shows that it is 17.2km which will take about 20 minutes. It seems that you will be cutting it fine 🙂

The last ferry will be at 19:00 when PG307 begins operating again. That allows plenty of time to get to the pier.

If the flight is delayed, the ferry waits for passengers coming from Trat Airport.

In very rare cases where the flight is delayed for 2-3 hours due to severe weather or mechanical problems, a special boat is run for Bangkok Airways passengers.

Yes, you can park overnight at the mainland pier. There’s a small parking area near the ticket office.

But very few people do, as it’s more convenient to bring their car onto the island.

Any changes to the ferry timetable are usually only announced a few days in advance.

At busy times ferries will run more frequently. And boats don’t always leave according to the timetable.

No problem to take your car on the ferry.

If you are travelling as a foot passenger then you can arrive 15 minutes before the boat leaves and you will be able to get on it. You can buy as many tickets as you need for your group.

If you are driving any delays will depend on which day you are travelling and whether you are going from the mainland to Koh Chang or from Koh Chang to the mainland.

It’s not possible to book ferry tickets in advance. Foot passengers always get on the next boat. But if you think you’ll arrive at the pier after 18:30, stay the night in Trat town.

The last boat to Koh Mak is around 16:00 from Krom Luang pier, Laem Ngop. The last boat to Koh Kood is at 14:20 from Laem Sok pier.

There aren’t any restrictions on people entering Trat province.

The only restrictions are for people checking into hotels & coming from one of the ‘dark red’ provinces. They have to show a negative covid test or proof of vaccination.

So you won’t have any problems if you come to Koh Chang from Koh Pha Ngan. But your hotel might ask for some proof that you have been living there. For example, you could show a 90 day report at Immigration or photo of rental contact etc

Passengers have to show proof of vaccination or a negative PCR covid test issued within the previous 72 hours or negative, doctor certified, ATK test issued within the previous 48 hours.

There are separate tickets for passengers and vehicles.

A car is 120 Baht one way. An adult passenger is 80 Baht one way. So the total would be 520 Baht for a car and five adults.

    I have a few queries,

    1) Can you pls update if there are any restrictions or any additional requirements due to covid 19 on travel by ferry to koh chang
    2) Any change in the schedule of ferry, is it still once every hour on all the days and what is the time of the first ferry and the last ferry.
    3) The pictures show cars parked almost next to each other, Is there a risk of cars banging into each other while the ferry is in motion. I am asking this because some people often leave their car in neutral gear without a parking brake.

I just updated the timetable. It was changed a couple of days ago, there are hourly sailings now.

In reality, if it is busy the ferries will just fill up and go. You won’t have to wait long for a boat, as motorbikes & scooters will go on the next departure. They don’t have to wait in a queue unlike cars.

The motorbike price will be 80 Baht.

Songkran is the busiest time of year on Koh Chang. On 10 April you should plan to get to the pier as early as possible. Many people will leave Bangkok in the middle of the night to be at the ferry early morning. You don’t have to leave that early. But you should try to get to the pier before lunchtime to avoid the longest queues. going back the ferries will be busiest mid morning to mid afternoon. So plan to leave early, before 08:00 or late, after 16:00.

There’s secure overnight parking, for people who don’t want to take their car on the ferry. It’s sensible not to leave anything valuable in it.

It will be OK. It’s only really a problem at extremely high or low tides. (A few times a year)

Small cars, low riding sports cars and vehicles with skirts etc drive on and off at an angle so they don’t get scratched under the car.

There’s no requirement to show your passport or any ID when you take the ferry.

Your hotel will probably ask for your passport when you check in, so you will need a copy if you don’t have the original.

Hi, can I buy tickets in the early morning on the day of travel for Koh Chang to Trat Ao Thammachat for later in the day, about 3pm? Or can you only buy tickets for the next ferry leaving? This will be in peak time Jan 11th 2020

You could buy tickets earlier in the day. But there’s no reason to do that. If you’re a foot passenger, you will get on the next boat anyway. If you are driving you’ll have to queue with everyone else. You can’t jump the queue.

    Hi
If you want to go with the last ferry at 7 pm from ko Chang to Bangkok, are you sure to get on or is it possible the Ferry is full and you will have to wait until next day? We will be leaving for Sweden the next morning so we have to be sure to get on the ferry.

If you arrive at the pier early then you won’t have any problems taking the boat. If you arrive late and the boat is full, you could try Centrepoint ferry, their last boat is at 19:30 and is rarely full.

If it’s busy, vehicles have to wait for a boat. At New Year and Thai holidays, the waiting time can be 3-4 hours or longer.

There are a lot of different companies running bus & minibus services from Bangkok to Koh Chang. I don’t know their prices. All 4 wheel vehicles pay the same price for the ferry.

Passengers are priced separately, so a car with two people costs the same as a minibus with 2 people, but a lot less than a minibus with 10 people.

The ferry timetable for Centrepoint pier is on this site. Boats from the main ferry pier do not run to a fixed timetable. They’re around every 45 minutes from 06:40 onwards.

There isn’t a best way to get to Bangkok. It depends on your budget and style of travelling.

You could take a minibus from your hotel on Koh Chang to a hotel in Bangkok city centre if you want an inexpensive door to door service.

The ferry will run the normal schedule. PG307 always lands at 18:00.

Just take the Bangkok Airways minibus from Trat Airport to your hotel on Koh Chang. You won’t miss the ferry. See: tratairportguide.com

It will be busier than normal. But if you are a foot passenger then there won’t be any delays. If you are driving a car then you might have to wait a couple of hours.

February 4, 2018 we are taking taxi from Siem Reap to Cambodian/Thai border then on to Trat (arriving in Trat around 16:30) for a Ferry crossing to Ko Chang. Which Pier would be the most ideal (fastest) for us to leave from in Trat to Ko Chang? Thanks in advance for time and assistance!

The nearest pier is Ao Thammachat, for the Ferry Koh Chang boats. They also have the fastest crossing time to Koh Chang.

      Hi

Tickets cant be booked in advance. The car ferries can get busy on long weekends and in Peak season. But shouldn’t be so busy on 1 December. It’s unlikely you will have to wait a long time for a boat.

    Hello Captain!

We are planning to travel to Koh Chang on 26 October 2017. Knowing this is a public holiday for the Kings Funeral, is there an expectation of big queues or fewer ferries running?

We are going to the island for a wedding so would like to be prepared ?

    Many thanks

The ferry companies havent announced any change to services. But as there won’t be many Thais travelling in the afternoon – when the cremation is on TV – there might be fewer boats simply due to lack of demand. But you’ll still get here without any problems.

You would have to take a private boat. That would be around 3,500 Baht. You would need to arrange it in advance. Then a driver to pick you up from the pier on Koh Chang and take you to Santhiya Tree Resort will be around 1,000 Baht.

      There are several ways:

Fly on Bangkok Airways from Trat
Take a public bus or minibus from Ao Thammachat ferry pier
Book tickets for a private shared minibus form any tour agent on Koh Chang
Take a private transfer by car

Ideally go to Ao Thammachat – for Ferry Koh Chang as they have more frequent sailings and faster crossing time.

When you get to Koh Chang take one of the shared pick up truck taxis that you will see waiting for passengers. They’ll drop you off at your hotel.

you can rent a scooter at both ferry piers on Koh Chang. Buy tickets for a minibus from Koh Chang to Pattaya when you are on the island from any tour agent. Or you can take a minibus from Ao Thammachat ferry pier on the mainland. I dont know the timetable. Check before you take the ferry to Koh Chang

It’s sometimes possible to find people in Laem Ngop who’ll bring you to the island at night. You’ll have to leave your car on the mainland. I think about 3,000 Baht for the boat. Then you’ll need someone to pick you up when you reach Koh Chang. As there won’t be any taxis at the piers.

Much easier to stay in Trat & next morning come to the island.

Take one of the morning minibuses to Suvarnabhumi Airport. They pick up from hotels on Koh Chang around 08:00 – 09:00. You’ll get there around 3-3.30pm. Then take the free shuttle bus from Suvarnabhumi to Don Meuang Airport.

Or if that’s cutting it too close, take the Suvarnabhumi Burupha minibus at around 06:15 – 06:30 from Koh Chang to Suvarnabhumi.

Buy tickets from pretty much any tour agent on the island.

In your answer to Lena which you gave on April 27, 2015 at 1:13 am you discussed the mini buses from Bangkok International Suvarnabhumi airport which you stated actually will take you all the way to the hotels on Koh Chang. I have two questions. First, is one of the hotels the “Sea View Resort and Spa?” And second, do I need an advance reservation for the mini bus or will there be enough buses so that I can just go over to Entrance 8 of the First Floor of the airport and take a bus to my hotel whenever I show up- probably in the mid morning? The minibuses now drop people off at a makeshift bus station in the north of Koh Chang. From there passengers take a pick up truck taxi to their hotels. This might be a permanent arrangement or might be temporary – no-one knows at the moment.

Minibus tickets can’t be booked in advance. If it’s busy extra buses will be provided. If it isnt then there will be just one minibus and if that’s full, you have to wait for the next one. Currently there’s a big bus at 07:50 and minibuses at 11:00 and 14:00.
